Takeaways on neurodiversity in the workplace from “Inspiration from Innovators”

Our recent “Inspiration from Innovators – Embracing Neurodiverse Talent at Work” online conference, part of the wider NeurodiverseWorx 2025 programme – shed light on a crucial aspect of building thriving and forward-thinking workplaces: neurodiversity. The event theme – “Focus on Fit: Building Workplaces That Work for Everyone” – brought together organizations including Microsoft, Aspiritech, Ultranauts, Rising Tide Car Wash, and Blue Star Recyclers to share practical systems and strategies for inclusive employment. Featuring insights from industry leaders, accessibility experts, and neurodiversity advocates, the sessions offered compelling reasons why embracing different cognitive styles isn’t just the right thing to do – it’s a strategic advantage for businesses.

This blog post delves into the key takeaways from the conference, highlighting the tangible benefits of neurodiversity in the workplace, practical advice for hiring practices, and why the movement matters now more than ever. We’ll also explore how these insights connect to essential life and pre-vocational skills – and invite you to share what matters most to you in this space – alongside an introduction to LifeQuest VR from LearningTimes.

Neurodiversity in the workplace: the benefit for businesses

Forget outdated notions – hiring neurodiverse individuals is about unlocking unique skills and perspectives that can drive innovation and boost performance. As Robin Kacyn from Aspiritech powerfully stated during the “It’s All About the Fit: Creating Innovative Opportunities for Neurodiverse Employees” session:

“Our employees are extremely passionate about providing the very best product to our clients.”

“They’re really hardworking.”

“They’re incredibly honest…that is an enormous asset to our company.”

“They’re very creative, utilizing super innovative methods that never would have crossed my mind.”

“They’re very loyal. Many have been at Aspiritech for a decade or more.”

These aren’t isolated anecdotes. Thomas D’Eri from Rising Tide Car Wash emphasized the long-term value:

“Our employment model provides long-term employment and first job opportunities, and getting to see people flourish, is really wonderful.”

These stories underscore that neurodiverse employees often bring exceptional focus, attention to detail, unique problem-solving skills, and strong loyalty – qualities that can significantly benefit teams and business outcomes.

Why neurodiversity in the workplace matters

Beyond the business case, embracing neurodiversity reflects a commitment to equity and to recognize the inherent value of every individual. As Thomas Iland shared:

“It is the neurodiverse individual that needs to walk their own path and find their own way.”

He continued with a message to parents and communities:

“Encourage your children to see that they have a lot to offer.”

This calls on all of us – employers, educators, and families – to create opportunities for everyone to thrive.

Practical strategies for inclusive hiring

The conference also offered practical steps for building neuroinclusive hiring processes. Emily Iland, in the “Evidence-Based Strategies to Overcome Obstacles in Interviews” session, noted:

“Adapted questions are so doable…if it helps you with autism, it’s good for everybody.”

Rajesh Anandan from Ultranauts, in the “Building Inclusive Workforces for All: Taking a Universal Design Approach” session, highlighted the power of internal change:

“The way you work and share information…has a huge impact, and that is something anybody can change in any size of organization.”

LearningTimes’ Inspiration from Innovators conference showcased how embracing neurodiversity in the workplace fuels workplace inclusion and innovation. As keynote speakers reminded us, inclusion is not about lowering the bar – it’s about removing the unnecessary hurdles so everyone can contribute at their best.

LearningTimes: Fostering growth through applied learning

LearningTimes is proud to support conversations like these and drive meaningful change through applied learning. Our approach focuses on accessible, real-world learning experiences that empower individuals and organizations to turn knowledge into action.

From hosting events like Inspiration from Innovators to designing immersive learning tools, we’re committed to helping support neurodiversity in the workplace and wider communities achieve their full potential.

LiveQuest VR – starting the conversation on life skills

As part of that commitment, LearningTimes has launched LifeQuest VR – an immersive, evidence-informed learning platform built to help neurodiverse teens, young adults, and adults develop essential life and workplace readiness skills.

We want to hear from you. Which life skills make the biggest difference – for you, your family, or your community? Communication? Managing daily routines? Navigating travel? Something completely different? Let’s talk about what matters most.

We’ll be running a series of short polls on our social channels (alongside more highlights from the conference sessions) to keep the conversation going. Your input will help shape where we focus next – and keep the discussion relevant to real needs.

Why LifeQuest VR matters

With autism diagnoses rising (1 in 31 children in the U.S.), access to life skills training is more critical than ever. Yet many neurodiverse individuals still face barriers to employment and independence.

LifeQuestVR bridges this gap, offering:

    • Pre-vocational skill development: communication, social interaction, emotional regulation, problem-solving.

    • Immersive learning: 3D virtual environments and AI-driven interactions.

    • Real-time support: Parents, teachers, and therapists can track and guide learners’ progress.

    • Flexible access: Use with a VR headset or on laptops/tablets for 2D learning.
